The Legend of Our Lady of the Snow

The legend goes, that in Rome in the summer of 352, there lived an old rich man named John and his wife, as they had no children they wished to leave their money to Our Lady but had little idea how. So Our Lady appeared to the couple and Pope Liberius (352-366) and asked that they build for her a church.

John asked Our Lady to make clear where they should build this church and to make it clear through a snowfall.

On the night of August 5th, there was a snowfall in Rome, and the people of Rome found snow laid out on Esquiline Hill in the exact specifications that the church was to be built in. Everyone was in shock and awe at the miracle and the church body rushed out to get the measurements before the snow melted.

The church was finished in 358 and was called “Basilica Liberii” or “Liberiana”. The church still stands today though the name has changed over the centuries it is currently known as Basilica of St. Mary Major, and is still beautifully devoted to Our Lady of Snows.
