The Green Scapular of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

The green Scapular of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is as unique as it is intriguing. Right down to the image used of Our Lady has no veil and her holding in her hands her Immaculate Heart. The great and powerful appearance of Our Lady to Sister Justine Bisqueyburo and the powerful promise she made to go with devotion to this scapular.

The History of the Green Scapular

On September 8th, 1840, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary,  the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Sister Justine Bisqueyburo, a daughter of Charity in Paris, France.  Mary held in her right hand her Immaculate Heart while it was surrounded by flames, and in her left, she held a green scapular.

An interior voice revealed to Sister Justine that Jesus wished to bring about a more tender, confident appreciation and love of His Beloved Mother through devotion to her by the title of her Immaculate Heart. When she is invoked under this title and Holy image, Our Mother Mary would obtain from her Son great favors for the petitioner. With the favors being in the areas of health of mind, heart, body, and soul.

Mary wished for Sr. Justine to copy and distribute the scapular as quickly as possible. However, some questions that were left unanswered in their meeting held the process up.
It was necessary to answer some clarifying questions before distributing the scapular. The questions are…

What circumstances are necessary to make effective the scapular?

Is there a special blessing that needs to go with it?

Was a ceremony necessary for people who wished to enroll in the scapulars use?

Are there any obligations that the enrolled would need to participate in?

Is the scapular to be used by only certain people or groups of people, or only in certain situations?

Due to these unanswered questions about the scapular, the copying and distribution of the scapulars were held up in the works for six years.

It was after this time that Mary reappeared to Sr. Justine and answered the questions that were being pondered over.

This is a unique scapular that is not based on a religious habit, as it is simply two holy images on one piece of green material.

There is no ceremony necessary for enrolment. It need only be blessed by a priest and worn by the one to whom the desired benefit of Our Lady’s Intercession is to be given.

If the person who is the intended benefactor, is unable to receive it and/or is unable to pray the prayer the scapular need only be kept near them or for them.

Any person of any faith may take part in devotion to this scapular and receive the benefits.

A small prayer that reads as “Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death” is to be said a minimum of once a day. But if possible it is important to say it as often as possible.

While the greatest graces are attached to merely using the Green Scapular; the graces are in great proportion to the degree of confidence of the person praying. This is symbolized on the scapular itself with the different levels of brightness of rays that flowed from Our Mother’s hands during her last apparition on the subject matter.

The Promise of Our Lady:

This scapular is a great devotion to add it is known for being related to spiritual conversions, protection from the Evil one, as well as healing both physical and mental illnesses.

How to Enroll:

This scapular is unique among scapulars There is no need to enroll into the order of this scapular. It also does not require any additional prayers or acts of penance. In her second visitation to Sr. Justine, she made clear these points. Saying that the scapular need only be blessed by a priest and given to the person who you wish to ask for intercession. But if the person in question is unwilling to wear it or to carry it with them then, it may be slipped unknown to the recipient in their home or work environments, or onto their person.
